The voting challenge of the European Medical Studentsā Association
The European Medical Studentsā Association (EMSA) is a non-governmental, non-profit organization representing 50,000 medical students across Europe. EMSA’s mission is to provide diverse opportunities for its members and to amplify the voice of medical students within European institutions and organizations. Due to its complexity and structure, EMSA faced significant challenges during its assembly management. The use of paper ballots during statutory assemblies, such as the spring assembly in Tübingen, Germany, proved to be inefficient and problematic. The difficulties in coordinating votes and ensuring high participation made it clear that a more modern and inclusive solution was needed.
The solution
To address these challenges, EMSA adopted Eligo, a digital voting platform designed to meet the needs of complex and geographically dispersed organizations like theirs. Eligo’s flexibility allows EMSA to manage a variety of scenarios, from ordinary assemblies to large congresses and hybrid electoral events, even utilizing video conferencing tools like Microsoft Teams. Eligoās intuitive features and extensive knowledge base enable the association to use the platform independently, with remote support in the assembly management from the Eligo team available if needed.
Results
The adoption of Eligo has radically transformed EMSA’s election process. Digital voting has increased member participation, facilitating engagement not only in voting but throughout the decision-making process. This has had a significant impact on rewriting internal policies and on the association’s initiatives. Samuel Olagoke, Research Development Officer of EMSA, in an interview with Irene Pugliatti, highlighted how Eligoās platform has made the voting process intuitive and easy to use, improving decision-making efficiency and reducing the time needed to organize voting assemblies. Additionally, the collection of valuable feedback through Eligoās polls has enabled EMSA to further refine its decision-making processes and promote greater inclusivity within the organization.
In conclusion, the implementation of Eligo has allowed EMSA to connect and engage all its members, spread across Europe and beyond, contributing to the association’s continuous growth and evolution.
